OpenSSL up to 1.0.0s/1.0.1o/1.0.2c PSK Identity Hint race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 1.0.0s/1.0.1o/1.0.2c. It has been classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component PSK Identity Hint Handler. Performing a manipulation results in race condition. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-3196. There is no available exploit. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 1.0.0s/1.0.1o/1.0.2c (Network Encryption Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown code block of the component PSK Identity Hint Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on availability.

The weakness was presented 12/03/2015 by Dr. Stephen Henson with OpenSSL as 20151203.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at openssl.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-3196 since 04/10/2015. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:

If PSK identity hints are received by a multi-threaded client then the values are wrongly updated in the parent SSL_CTX structure. This can result in a race condition potentially leading to a double free of the identify hint data.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87434 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : OpenSSL vulnerability (K55540723)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350088 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for openssl: ALAS-2015-614).

Upgrading to version 1.0.0t, 1.0.1p or 1.0.2d eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (108505), Tenable (87434), SecurityFocus (BID 78622†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56813†). See VDB-79410, VDB-79411, VDB-79412 and VDB-79417 for similar entries. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
