A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 1.12.8 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function init_t38_info_conv of the file epan/dissectors/packet-t38.c of the component T.38 Dissector. The init_t38_info_conv function in epan/dissectors/packet-t38.c in the T.38 dissector in Wireshark 1.12.x before 1.12.9 does not ensure that a conversation exists, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was published 01/04/2016 by Buildbot Builder (Rick) (Website). The advisory is shared for download at code.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-8716 since 01/03/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87824 (Wireshark 1.12.x < 1.12.9 Multiple DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175659 (Debian Security Update for wireshark (DSA 3505-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.12.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
