A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 1.12.8/2.0.0 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown code of the file wiretap/vwr.c of the component VeriWave File Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. wiretap/vwr.c in the VeriWave file parser in Wireshark 1.12.x before 1.12.9 and 2.0.x before 2.0.1 does not validate certain signature and Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) data, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and application crash) via a crafted file.
The weakness was published 01/04/2016 with Google (Website). The advisory is available at code.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-8726 since 01/03/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim.
