Details
A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 1.12.8/2.0.0 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function tvb_bcd_dig_to_wmem_packet_str of the file epan/dissectors/packet-ansi_a.c of the component Mobile Identity Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The Mobile Identity parser in (1) epan/dissectors/packet-ansi_a.c in the ANSI A dissector and (2) epan/dissectors/packet-gsm_a_common.c in the GSM A dissector in Wireshark 1.12.x before 1.12.9 and 2.0.x before 2.0.1 improperly uses the tvb_bcd_dig_to_wmem_packet_str function, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (buffer overflow and application crash) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was disclosed 01/04/2016 with Google (Website). The advisory is shared for download at code.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-8728 since 01/03/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87824 (Wireshark 1.12.x < 1.12.9 Multiple DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168381 (OpenSuSE Security Update for wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2016:0054-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.12.9 or 2.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (87824) and SecurityFocus (BID 79382†). The entries VDB-80055, VDB-80056, VDB-80057 and VDB-80058 are pretty similar. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
