Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Wireshark up to 1.12.8/2.0.0 (Packet Analyzer Software). This issue affects the function dissct_rsl_ipaccess_msg of the file epan/dissectors/packet-rsl.c of the component RSL Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The dissct_rsl_ipaccess_msg function in epan/dissectors/packet-rsl.c in the RSL dissector in Wireshark 1.12.x before 1.12.9 and 2.0.x before 2.0.1 does not reject unknown TLV types, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and application crash) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was published 01/04/2016 with Google (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at code.wireshark.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-8731 since 01/03/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87824 (Wireshark 1.12.x < 1.12.9 Multiple DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175690 (Debian Security Update for Wireshark (DSA 3516-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.12.9 or 2.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
