Details
A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark up to 1.12.8/2.0.0 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ngsniffer_process_record of the file wiretap/ngsniffer.c of the component Sniffer File Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
The ngsniffer_process_record function in wiretap/ngsniffer.c in the Sniffer file parser in Wireshark 1.12.x before 1.12.9 and 2.0.x before 2.0.1 does not validate the relationships between record lengths and record header lengths, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and application crash) via a crafted file.
The weakness was disclosed 01/04/2016 by Mateusz Jurczyk (Website). The advisory is shared at code.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-8733 since 01/03/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and also a exploit are known.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87824 (Wireshark 1.12.x < 1.12.9 Multiple DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124748 (Solaris 11.3 Support Repository Update (SRU) 5.6.0 Missing).
Upgrading to version 1.12.9 or 2.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (87824), SecurityFocus (BID 79814†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-55629†). The entries VDB-80055, VDB-80056, VDB-80057 and VDB-80058 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
