Details
A vulnerability was found in Apache ActiveMQ up to 5.12.x (Application Server Software). It has been classified as very critical. This affects an unknown function of the component Broker Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Apache ActiveMQ 5.x before 5.13.0 does not restrict the classes that can be serialized in the broker, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted serialized Java Message Service (JMS) ObjectMessage object.
The weakness was published 01/08/2016 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at issues.apache.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-5254 since 07/01/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/26/2024).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87410 (Apache ActiveMQ 5.x < 5.13.0 Java Object Deserialization RCE), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11889 (TripWire Enterprise Console Prior to version 8.6.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities.).
Upgrading to version 5.13.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
