A vulnerability was found in Apache Subversion up to 1.9.2 (Versioning Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function read_string of the file libsvn_ra_svn/marshal.c of the component svn Protocol Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Integer overflow in the read_string function in libsvn_ra_svn/marshal.c in Apache Subversion 1.9.x before 1.9.3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an svn:// protocol string, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow and an out-of-bounds read.
The weakness was released 01/08/2016 by Ivan Zhakov with VisualSVN (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securitytracker.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-5259 since 07/01/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87388 (FreeBSD : subversion -- multiple vulnerabilities (daadef86-a366-11e5-8b40-20cf30e32f6d)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350027 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for mod_dav_svn,subversion: ALAS-2016-676).
Upgrading to version 1.9.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 22572.
