A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows 7 SP1/8/8.1/10/Server 2012 R2 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component DLL Loader. The manipulation as part of a Application leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Microsoft Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, and Windows 10 Gold and 1511 mishandle DLL loading, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, aka "DLL Loading Remote Code Execution Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 01/12/2016 as MS16-007 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-0018. Local access is required to approach this attack. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87890 (MS16-007: Security Update for Microsoft Windows to Address Remote Code Execution (3124901)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91151 (Microsoft Windows Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS16-007)).
Applying the patch MS16-007 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
