A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Excel up to 2016 (Spreadsheet Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component Office Document Handler. The weakness was released 01/12/2016 by Steven Seeley with Zero Day Initiative as MS16-004 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-0035 since 12/04/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87882 (MS16-004: Security Update for Microsoft Office to Address Remote Code Execution (3124585)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110263 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS16-004)).
Applying the patch MS16-004 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 20831.
