FFmpeg 2.x allows remote attackers to conduct cross-origin attacks and read arbitrary files by using the subfile protocol in an HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) M3U8 file, leading to an external HTTP request in which the URL string contains an arbitrary line of a local file.
The weakness was shared 01/15/2016 (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-1898 since 01/14/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
