Netscape Network Security Services Library SSL2 Hello Message heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Netscape Network Security Services Library (Software Library) (unknown version). This issue affects an unknown code block of the component SSL2 Hello Message Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Heap-based buffer overflow in Netscape Network Security Services (NSS) library allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a modified record length field in an SSLv2 client hello message.

The bug was discovered 06/03/2004. The weakness was presented 08/23/2004 by Mark Dowd with ISS X-Force (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xforce.iss.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0826 since 08/27/2004. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.

After 2 days, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at immunitysec.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 81 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14361 (Netscape NSS Library SSLv2 Challenge Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38330 (Mozilla Network Security Services Library Remote Heap Overflow Vulnerability).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.mozilla.org. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2656. In this case the pattern |01| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2946.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16314), Tenable (14361), SecurityFocus (BID 11015†), OSVDB (9116†) and Secunia (SA12362†). ciac.org is providing further details. See VDB-82, VDB-332, VDB-333 and VDB-427 for similar entries. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
