Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.2 libxslt type confusion

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.2 (Operating System). This affects an unknown code block of the component libxslt. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a type confusion vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-843. The product allocates or initializes a resource such as a pointer, object, or variable using one type, but it later accesses that resource using a type that is incompatible with the original type. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The xsltStylePreCompute function in preproc.c in libxslt 1.1.28 does not check if the parent node is an element, which allows attackers to cause a denial of service via a crafted XML file, related to a "type confusion" issue.

The weakness was disclosed 01/19/2016 by Stefan Cornelius (puzzor) with Red Hat as HT205731 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-7995 since 10/28/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:

A type confusion issue existed in libxslt. This issue was addressed through improved memory handling.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87001 (FreeBSD : libxslt -- DoS vulnerability due to type confusing error (ecc268f2-8fc2-11e5-918c-bcaec565249c)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124584 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11.3 and Security Update 2016-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2016-01-19-2)).

Upgrading to version 10.11.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (87001) and SecurityFocus (BID 77325†). The entries VDB-79234, VDB-80331, VDB-80332 and VDB-80333 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
