A vulnerability has been found in Apple iOS up to 6.1.2 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as problematic. The ARM prefetch abort handler in the kernel in Apple iOS before 6.1.3 and Apple TV before 5.2.1 does not ensure that it has been invoked in an abort context, which makes it easier for local users to bypass the ASLR protection mechanism via crafted code.
The weakness was shared 03/19/2013 by evad3rs as HT5704 as confirmed advisory (Apple Security Announce). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-0978 since 01/10/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A private exploit has been developed by evad3rs. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65633 (Apple iOS < 6.1.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mobile Devices.
Upgrading to version 6.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
