Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 6.1.2 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component Macho-O Executable File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
dyld in Apple iOS before 6.1.3 and Apple TV before 5.2.1 does not properly manage the state of file loading for Mach-O executable files, which allows local users to bypass intended code-signing requirements via a file that contains overlapping segments.
The weakness was published 03/19/2013 by evad3rs as HT5704 as confirmed advisory (Apple Security Announce). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-0977 since 01/10/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
A private exploit has been developed by evad3rs. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65633 (Apple iOS < 6.1.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mobile Devices.
Upgrading to version 6.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
