A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in ntp 4.2.8p5 (Network Management Software). Affected is an unknown code block of the component ntpq. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-835. The getresponse function in ntpq in NTP versions before 4.2.8p9 and 4.3.x before 4.3.90 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via crafted packets with incorrect values.

The weakness was disclosed 01/19/2016 as confirmed security notice (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.ntp.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-8158 since 11/13/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88054 (SUSE SLES11 Security Update : ntp (SUSE-SU-2016:1311-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 330001 (IBM AIX NTP Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 4.2.8p6 eliminates this vulnerability.
