Linux Kernel 4.3 PIT Counter arch/x86/kvm/x86.c divide by zero

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel 4.3 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the file arch/x86/kvm/x86.c of the component PIT Counter. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a divide by zero vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-369. The product divides a value by zero. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

arch/x86/kvm/x86.c in the Linux kernel before 4.4 does not reset the PIT counter values during state restoration, which allows guest OS users to cause a denial of service (divide-by-zero error and host OS crash) via a zero value, related to the kvm_vm_ioctl_set_pit and kvm_vm_ioctl_set_pit2 functions.

The weakness was shared 02/08/2016 by Prasad J Pandit (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-7513 since 09/29/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87741 (Debian DSA-3434-1 : linux - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169149 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2016:2245-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (87741), SecurityFocus (BID 79901†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56447†). The entries VDB-79929 and VDB-80802 are related to this item. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
