A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows Vista SP2 up to Server 2012 R2 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component WebDav. The weakness was presented 02/09/2016 by koczkatamas as MS16-016 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-0051 since 12/04/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by koczkatamas and been published 1 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88648 (MS16-016: Security Update for WebDAV to Address Elevation of Privilege (3136041)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91164 (Microsoft WebDAV Privilege Escalation Vulnerability (MS16-016)).
Applying the patch MS16-016 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
