The kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, Windows RT 8.1, and Windows 10 Gold and 1511 allow local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, aka "Win32k Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 02/10/2016 with Microsoft as MS16-016 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-0048 since 12/04/2015. Attacking locally is a requirement. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88650 (MS16-018: Security Update for Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers to Address Elevation of Privilege (3136082)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91169 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Driver Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS16-018)).

Applying the patch MS16-016 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com.
