Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apache Tomcat 6.0/7.0/8.0/9.0 (Application Server Software). This affects an unknown function of the component Error Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was released 02/22/2016 as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-5345 since 07/01/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88935 (Apache Tomcat 6.0.x < 6.0.45 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350044 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for tomcat8: ALAS-2016-658).
Upgrading to version 6.0.45, 7.0.67, 8.0.30 or 9.0.0.M3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
