Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apache Tomcat 6.0/7.0/8.0/9.0 (Application Server Software). Affected is the function getResource/getResourceAsStream/getResourcePaths of the component ServletContext. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was shared 02/22/2016 by Security Team with Tomcat Security Team as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-5174 since 07/01/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88935 (Apache Tomcat 6.0.x < 6.0.45 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350839 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for tomcat7: AL2012-2016-121).
Upgrading to version 6.0.45, 7.0.67, 8.0.30 or 9.0.0.M3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (110860), Tenable (88935), SecurityFocus (BID 83329†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56715†). The entries VDB-81079, VDB-81080 and VDB-81081 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
