A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apache Tomcat 7.0/8.0/9.0 (Application Server Software). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Index Page. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 02/22/2016 as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-5351 since 07/01/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88936 (Apache Tomcat 7.0.x < 7.0.68 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350024 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for tomcat8: ALAS-2016-679).
Upgrading to version 7.0.67, 8.0.30 or 9.0.0.M3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
