Details
A vulnerability was found in Wireshark 2.0.0/2.0.1 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function iseries_check_file_type of the file wiretap/iseries.c of the component iSeries File Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The iseries_check_file_type function in wiretap/iseries.c in the iSeries file parser in Wireshark 2.0.x before 2.0.2 does not consider that a line may lack the "OBJECT PROTOCOL" substring, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and application crash) via a crafted file.
The weakness was shared 02/28/2016 by Mateusz Jurczyk with Google (Website). The advisory is shared for download at code.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-2529 since 02/19/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
