A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 1.12.9/2.0.1 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the file epan/dissectors/packet-rsl.c of the component RSL Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Off-by-one error in epan/dissectors/packet-rsl.c in the RSL dissector in Wireshark 1.12.x before 1.12.10 and 2.0.x before 2.0.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and application crash) via a crafted packet that triggers a 0xff tag value, a different vulnerability than CVE-2016-2530.
The weakness was released 02/28/2016 by Mateusz Jurczyk (Website). The advisory is available at code.wireshark.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-2531 since 02/19/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 1.12.10 or 2.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
