Wireshark up to 1.12.9/2.0.1 LLRP Dissector packet-llrp.c dissect_llrp_parameters memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 1.12.9/2.0.1 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function dissect_llrp_parameters of the file epan/dissectors/packet-llrp.c of the component LLRP Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The dissect_llrp_parameters function in epan/dissectors/packet-llrp.c in the LLRP dissector in Wireshark 1.12.x before 1.12.10 and 2.0.x before 2.0.2 does not limit the recursion depth, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption or application crash) via a crafted packet.

The weakness was disclosed 02/28/2016 by Mateusz Jurczyk (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at code.wireshark.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-2532 since 02/20/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 89048 (FreeBSD : wireshark -- multiple vulnerabilities (45117749-df55-11e5-b2bd-002590263bf5)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168802 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for wireshark (SUSE-SU-2016:1344-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.12.10 or 2.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (89048), SecurityFocus (BID 83588†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56948†). The entries VDB-81097, VDB-81098, VDB-81099 and VDB-81100 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
