Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Squid Proxy up to 3.5.14/4.0.6 (Firewall Software). Affected is some unknown processing of the component HTTP Header Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
Squid 3.x before 3.5.15 and 4.x before 4.0.7 does not properly append data to String objects, which allows remote servers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and daemon exit) via a long string, as demonstrated by a crafted HTTP Vary header.
The weakness was presented 02/27/2016 by Alex with Open Systems AG (Website). The advisory is shared for download at squid-cache.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-2569 since 02/26/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 89045 (Debian DLA-445-2 : squid3 regression update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169027 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for squid3 (SUSE-SU-2016:1996-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.5.15 or 4.0.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 24467.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (89045), SecurityFocus (BID 83406†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-57368†). See VDB-4435, VDB-7183, VDB-9526 and VDB-67519 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
