The Edge Side Includes (ESI) parser in Squid 3.x before 3.5.15 and 4.x before 4.0.7 does not check buffer limits during XML parsing, which allows remote HTTP servers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and daemon exit) via a crafted XML document, related to esi/CustomParser.cc and esi/CustomParser.h.
The weakness was shared 02/27/2016 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-2570 since 02/26/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 3.5.15 or 4.0.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
