A vulnerability was found in Squid Proxy 3.5.13/4.0 (Firewall Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown functionality of the file http.cc of the component HTTP Status Code Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. http.cc in Squid 4.x before 4.0.7 relies on the HTTP status code after a response-parsing failure, which allows remote HTTP servers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and daemon exit) via a malformed response.
The weakness was disclosed 02/23/2016 by Alex with Open Systems AG (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-2572 since 02/26/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 89080 (Squid 3.x < 3.5.15 / 4.x < 4.0.7 Multiple DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Firewalls and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169027 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for squid3 (SUSE-SU-2016:1996-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
