A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird up to 19.0.2 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. Untrusted search path vulnerability in the Mozilla Updater in Mozilla Firefox before 20.0, Firefox ESR 17.x before 17.0.5, Thunderbird before 17.0.5, Thunderbird ESR 17.x before 17.0.5, and SeaMonkey before 2.17 allows local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse DLL file in an unspecified directory.
The weakness was presented 04/02/2013 by Shuichiro Suzuki (Ash) with Dell as MFSA2013-34 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-0797 since 01/02/2013. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1574 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65847 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (94976433-9c74-11e2-a9fc-d43d7e0c7c02)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166260 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Mozilla Firefox (SUSE-SU-2013:0850-1)).
Upgrading to version 20.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
