A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.3 (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown code block of the component IOUSBFamily. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. IOUSBFamily in Apple OS X before 10.11.4 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code in a privileged context or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted app.
The weakness was presented 03/21/2016 by Juwei Lin with Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) as HT206167 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-1749 since 01/13/2016. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. Multiple memory corruption issues were addressed through improved memory handling.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90096 (Mac OS X 10.11.x < 10.11.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124842 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11.4 and Security Update 2016-002 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2016-03-21-5)).
Upgrading to version 10.11.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
