A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird up to 19.0.2 (Web Browser). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Timed History Navigation Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. Impacted is integrity. Mozilla Firefox before 20.0, Firefox ESR 17.x before 17.0.5, Thunderbird before 17.0.5, Thunderbird ESR 17.x before 17.0.5, and SeaMonkey before 2.17 do not ensure the correctness of the address bar during history navigation, which allows remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks or phishing attacks by leveraging control over navigation timing.
The weakness was disclosed 04/02/2013 by Mariusz Mlynski (Cody Crews) with Oracle as 803870 as confirmed changelog entry (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-0793 since 01/02/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65770 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox / xulrunner (CESA-2013:0696)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121048 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2013:0696)).
Upgrading to version 20.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
