Apple iOS up to 9.2 Messages cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Apple iOS up to 9.2 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Messages. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Messages in Apple iOS before 9.3, OS X before 10.11.4, and watchOS before 2.2 does not properly implement a cryptographic protection mechanism, which allows remote attackers to read message attachments via vectors related to duplicate messages.

The weakness was presented 03/21/2016 by arma as HT206166 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-1788 since 01/13/2016. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600. The advisory points out:

A cryptographic issue was addressed by rejecting duplicate messages on the client.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90096 (Mac OS X 10.11.x < 10.11.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124842 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11.4 and Security Update 2016-002 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2016-03-21-5)).

Upgrading to version 9.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (90096), SecurityFocus (BID 84971†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-57599†). See VDB-81414, VDB-81421, VDB-81422 and VDB-81423 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
