A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Sophos Web Appliance 3.7.8.1. This issue affects an unknown part of the file end-user-/errdoc.php. The manipulation of the argument msg with the input value PHNjcmlwdD5hbGVydCgneHNzJyk7PC9zY3JpcHQ%2bCg%3d%3d leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in Sophos Web Appliance before 3.7.8.2 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the (1) xss parameter in an allow action to rss.php, (2) msg parameter to end-user/errdoc.php, (3) h parameter to end-user/ftp_redirect.php, or (4) threat parameter to the Blocked component.
The weakness was published 04/03/2013 by Wolfgang Ettlingers with SEC Consult as 118969 as confirmed bulletin (Website). The advisory is shared at sophos.com. The public release has been coordinated with Sophos. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2643 since 03/22/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by SEC Consult and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:end-user-/errdoc.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66024 (Sophos Web Protection Appliance end-user-/errdoc.php msg Parameter XSS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses : XSS.
Upgrading to version 3.7.8.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
