A vulnerability was found in Sophos Web Appliance 3.7.8.1. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the file cgi-bin/patience.cgi. The manipulation of the argument id with the input value ../../log/ui_access_log%00 leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in patience.cgi in Sophos Web Appliance before 3.7.8.2 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via the id parameter.
The weakness was disclosed 04/03/2013 by Wolfgang Ettlingers with SEC Consult as 118969 as confirmed bulletin (Website). The advisory is available at sophos.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-2641 since 03/22/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy.
