A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0/5.0.1 SP3/5.5 SP2/6.0/6.0 SP1 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component MHTML URL Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is integrity.
The weakness was presented 11/25/2003 by Liu Die Yu (Dieyu) (Website). The advisory is shared at k-otik.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0380. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12208 (MS04-013: Cumulative Update for Outlook Express (837009)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90110 (Microsoft Outlook Express Cumulative Security Update Not Installed (MS04-013)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2563.
