The Issues API in Redmine before 2.6.8, 3.0.x before 3.0.6, and 3.1.x before 3.1.2 allows remote authenticated users to obtain sensitive information in changeset messages by leveraging permission to read issues with related changesets from other projects.
The weakness was disclosed 04/12/2016 by Matthias Geerdsen (Website). The advisory is shared at debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-8473 since 12/03/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87298 (FreeBSD : redmine -- multiple vulnerabilities (be63533c-9ed7-11e5-8f5c-002590263bf5)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175683 (Debian Security Update for redmine (DSA 3529-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.6.8, 3.0.6 or 3.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
