A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Excel 2007 SP3/2010 SP2 (Spreadsheet Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Office Document Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Microsoft Excel 2007 SP3, Excel 2010 SP2, Office Compatibility Pack SP3, Excel Services on SharePoint Server 2007 SP3, and Excel Services on SharePoint Server 2010 SP2 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Office document, aka "Microsoft Office Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The weakness was presented 04/12/2016 as MS16-042 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-0136 since 12/04/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90436 (MS16-042: Security Update for Microsoft Office (3148775)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110271 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS16-042)).

Applying the patch MS16-042 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 24132.
