A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in LibTIFF libtiff5.tif (Image Processing Software). This issue affects the function NeXTDecode of the file tif_next.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The NeXTDecode function in tif_next.c in LibTIFF allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (uninitialized memory access) via a crafted TIFF image, as demonstrated by libtiff5.tif.
The weakness was disclosed 04/13/2016 by Salvatore Bonaccorso (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-1547 since 02/06/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84370 (Amazon Linux AMI : libtiff (ALAS-2015-553)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 296002 (Solaris 11.3 Support Repository Update (SRU) 9.4.0 Missing).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
