A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Xymon up to 4.1.x/4.2.x/4.3.24. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the file web/useradm.c of the component xymond. The manipulation of the argument adduser_name with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. xymond in Xymon 4.1.x, 4.2.x, and 4.3.x before 4.3.25 allow remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters in the adduser_name argument in (1) web/useradm.c or (2) web/chpasswd.c.
The weakness was shared 04/13/2016 (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-2056 since 01/24/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. Upgrading to version 4.3.25 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
