Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Squid Proxy up to 2.x/3.5.16/4.0.8 (Firewall Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the file cachemgr.cgi. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. Buffer overflow in cachemgr.cgi in Squid 2.x, 3.x before 3.5.17, and 4.x before 4.0.9 might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service or execute arbitrary code by seeding manager reports with crafted data.
The weakness was released 04/20/2016 by CESG and Yuriy M. Kaminskiy with Oracle as SQUID-2016:5 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at squid-cache.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-4051 since 04/20/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 3.5.17 or 4.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
