A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Squid Proxy up to 3.5.16/4.0.8 (Firewall Software). This affects some unknown processing of the component ESI Response Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in Squid 3.x before 3.5.17 and 4.x before 4.0.9 allow remote HTTP servers to cause a denial of service or execute arbitrary code via crafted Edge Side Includes (ESI) responses.
The weakness was disclosed 04/20/2016 with CESG as SQUID-2016:6 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at squid-cache.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-4052 since 04/20/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
