Wireshark up to 1.12.10/2.0.2 IEEE 802.11 Dissector packet-capwap.c input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Wireshark up to 1.12.10/2.0.2. The affected element is an unknown function of the file epan/dissectors/packet-capwap.c of the component IEEE 802.11 Dissector. The manipulation results in input validation. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2016-4078. There is not any exploit available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Wireshark up to 1.12.10/2.0.2 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected is an unknown code block of the file epan/dissectors/packet-capwap.c of the component IEEE 802.11 Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The IEEE 802.11 dissector in Wireshark 1.12.x before 1.12.11 and 2.0.x before 2.0.3 does not properly restrict element lists, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (deep recursion and application crash) via a crafted packet, related to epan/dissectors/packet-capwap.c and epan/dissectors/packet-ieee80211.c.

The weakness was released 04/25/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at code.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-4078 since 04/24/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90786 (Wireshark 1.12.x < 1.12.11 Multiple DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370156 (Wireshark Multiple Denial of Service Vulnerabilities (wnpa-sec-2016-19 to wnpa-sec-2016-28)).

Upgrading to version 1.12.11 or 2.0.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (90786). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-82833, VDB-82834, VDB-82835 and VDB-82837. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
