Details
A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 2.0.2 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the file epan/dissectors/packet-mswsp.c of the component MS-WSP Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
epan/dissectors/packet-mswsp.c in the MS-WSP dissector in Wireshark 2.0.x before 2.0.3 does not ensure that data is available before array allocation, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was released 04/25/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared at code.wireshark.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-4083 since 04/24/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90787 (Wireshark 2.0.x < 2.0.3 Multiple DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370156 (Wireshark Multiple Denial of Service Vulnerabilities (wnpa-sec-2016-19 to wnpa-sec-2016-28)).
Upgrading to version 2.0.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
