GNU Samba up to 3.0.6 ASN.1 Parser infinite loop

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in GNU Samba up to 3.0.6 (File Transfer Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component ASN.1 Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Samba 3.0.6 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop and memory exhaustion) via certain malformed requests that cause new processes to be spawned and enter an infinite loop.

The bug was discovered 09/02/2004. The weakness was shared 09/13/2004 by iDefense with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is shared at idefense.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-0807 since 08/25/2004. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 11 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18757 (Slackware 10.0 / current : samba DoS (SSA:2004-257-01)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Slackware Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115259 (Samba Denial of Service Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at us3.samba.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17325), Tenable (18757), SecurityFocus (BID 11156†), OSVDB (9917†) and Secunia (SA12516†). The entry VDB-830 is related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
