Linux Kernel up to 4.4.0 on PowerPC TM Suspend Mode process.c tm_reclaim_thread access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.4.0 on PowerPC (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function tm_reclaim_thread of the file arch/powerpc/kernel/process.c of the component TM Suspend Mode. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-284. The product does not restrict or incorrectly restricts access to a resource from an unauthorized actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The tm_reclaim_thread function in arch/powerpc/kernel/process.c in the Linux kernel before 4.4.1 on powerpc platforms does not ensure that TM suspend mode exists before proceeding with a tm_reclaim call, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (TM Bad Thing exception and panic) via a crafted application.

The weakness was presented 04/27/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-8845 since 04/13/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95321 (CentOS 7 : kernel (CESA-2016:2574)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169014 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2016:1937-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.4.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (95321). See VDB-80182, VDB-82947, VDB-83132 and VDB-88358 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
