Linux Kernel up to 4.0.1 System Call fs/namespace.c access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.0.1. Impacted is an unknown function of the file fs/namespace.c of the component System Call Handler. Such manipulation leads to access control. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-9717. Local access is required to approach this attack. No exploit exists. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.0.1 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the file fs/namespace.c of the component System Call Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-284. The product does not restrict or incorrectly restricts access to a resource from an unauthorized actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

fs/namespace.c in the Linux kernel before 4.0.2 processes MNT_DETACH umount2 system calls without verifying that the MNT_LOCKED flag is unset, which allows local users to bypass intended access restrictions and navigate to filesystem locations beneath a mount by calling umount2 within a user namespace.

The weakness was disclosed 05/02/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at groups.google.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-9717. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93168 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2016:1696-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169014 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2016:1937-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (93168) and SecurityFocus (BID 74226†). The entries VDB-82948, VDB-88358 and VDB-90525 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
