Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 3.19.1 (Operating System). This affects an unknown functionality in the library arch/x86/include/asm/xsave.h of the component xsave/xrstor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The xsave/xrstor implementation in arch/x86/include/asm/xsave.h in the Linux kernel before 3.19.2 creates certain .altinstr_replacement pointers and consequently does not provide any protection against instruction faulting, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (panic) by triggering a fault, as demonstrated by an unaligned memory operand or a non-canonical address memory operand.
The weakness was presented 05/02/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-2672 since 03/21/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82630 (Fedora 20 : kernel-3.19.3-100.fc20 (2015-5024)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 3.19.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (82630). See VDB-83137, VDB-83136, VDB-83135 and VDB-83134 for similar entries. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
