Ethereal RSVP Dissector memory allocation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Ethereal. The affected element is an unknown function of the component RSVP Dissector. Executing a manipulation can lead to memory allocation. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2005-3241. Furthermore, an exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Ethereal (Packet Analyzer Software) (unknown version). This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component RSVP Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. As an impact it is known to affect availability.

The weakness was published 10/19/2005 by iDefense with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is available at ethereal.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-3241. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22713 (Debian DSA-1171-1 : ethereal - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117829 (CentOS Security Update for Ethereal (CESA-2005:809)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (22713), SecurityFocus (BID 15148†), OSVDB (20123†), Secunia (SA17254†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-9521†).
