Ethereal ISIS LSP Dissector memory allocation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Ethereal. The impacted element is an unknown function of the component ISIS LSP Dissector. The manipulation leads to memory allocation. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2005-3241. Additionally, an exploit exists. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Ethereal (Packet Analyzer Software) (version now known). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component ISIS LSP Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. Impacted is availability.

The weakness was released 10/19/2005 by iDefense with iDEFENSE (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at ethereal.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-3241. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22713 (Debian DSA-1171-1 : ethereal - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117829 (CentOS Security Update for Ethereal (CESA-2005:809)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (22713), SecurityFocus (BID 15148†), OSVDB (20124†), Secunia (SA17254†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-9521†).
