Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.5.2 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function atl2_probe of the file drivers/net/ethernet/atheros/atlx/atl2.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (Kernel Memory). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The atl2_probe function in drivers/net/ethernet/atheros/atlx/atl2.c in the Linux kernel through 4.5.2 incorrectly enables scatter/gather I/O, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory by reading packet data.
The weakness was published 05/02/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-2117 since 01/29/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91425 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS : linux vulnerabilities (USN-2989-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196488 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-2989-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (91425) and SecurityFocus (BID 84500†). Similar entries are available at VDB-81887, VDB-83141, VDB-83148 and VDB-87128. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
